Violinist and founder member of 70’s Super Group CURVED AIR, he contributed to the writing of three top twenty albums, and a top five single. In an extensive career in music, he has worked with such legends as STING, ERIC CLAPTON, IAN ANDERSON (Jethro Tull), DAVE STEWART, GARY BROOKER (Procul Harum), and STEWART COPELAND.
He started off his musical training at Dartington College of Arts, and then went on to the Royal College of Music. After leaving college, seduced by the 60’s London rock scene, he formed a band, which was eventually to become the highly successful rock group, CURVED AIR.
Since leaving CURVEDAIR, he has released several solo albums, in both “Rock”, and “Classical” genres. Among these, a “CONCERTO FOR ELECTRIC VIOLIN” which was premiered on the SOUTH BANK SHOW with the ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA and himself as soloist.
After orchestrating STEWART COPELAND’S opera, “THE HOLY BLOOD AND CRESCENT MOON”, premiered by the Cleveland Opera, Darryl became increasingly drawn to that medium, and in November 1996 his own opera, THE “RUSSIAN” OPERA was premiered at The Place Theatre in London.
Alongside these projects Darryl has also worked as a film and television composer, writing scores for ROGER CORMAN’S “THE FINISHING TOUCH”, “RAGE AND HONOUR I” and “II” and a pan European television programme for THE DISNEY CO.
His song writing collaborations include setting music to lyrics by STEVEN BERKOFF, and the arranging and orchestration of STING’S songs, for an album recorded by the L.S.O.
Recent work includes a symphonic choral work entitled “SIREN’S ROCK”, which formed part of the RNLI’S official 175th anniversary album.
